Ad Insertion: SSAI vs CSAI
CTV advertising hinges on how ads are stitched into video content. Two dominant approaches exist, and the choice between them shapes the entire technical architecture of a campaign.
SSAI (Server-Side)
Ads are spliced directly into the HLS playlist in the cloud. The TV receives a seamless stream; it has no idea an ad break is happening. Cloud-based transcoding handles the splice.

CSAI (Client-Side)
The TV app requests ads from an ad server and splices them locally. This requires a heavy SDK running on the screen itself.

Identifiers: IFA, GAID & the IP Problem
CTV lacks the persistent identifiers that mobile advertisers rely on. There is no GAID or IDFA on a TV. Instead, the ecosystem uses device-specific IFAs (Identifier for Advertisers), each tied to a single OEM's walled garden.

Residential IP addresses have become a volatile substitute for household tracking. They shift, they pool (a single IP serves 5 households in an apartment block), and they break attribution the moment a user switches networks.
SIVT: Sophisticated Invalid Traffic
SSAI solved the latency problem but introduced a verification blind spot. When ad beacons fire from a cloud server rather than the physical screen, fraudsters can spoof the entire viewing event.
SSAI Spoofing
Fraudsters inject fake ad requests into the server-side manifest. The cloud server fires a beacon for an impression that never reached a human eye.
Proxy-Based Fraud
Bot operators route traffic through residential proxy networks, making invalid traffic appear to come from real ISP pools.
Beacon Vulnerability
When a tracking pixel fires from the ad server rather than the TV, the verification vendor cannot distinguish a real playout from a server-generated event.

GDPR: Consent via Remote Control
Collecting consent on a TV is a usability nightmare. TCF 2.2 requires granular vendor preferences, but a TV remote with 4 directional buttons is a terrible interface for a 200-vendor consent screen.
The Compliance Friction
Most CTV apps use a simplified "Accept All" CMP that does not meet the granularity requirements of TCF 2.2. Regulators in the UK and EU are beginning to scrutinise this gap.
Household vs Individual
A TV serves a household, but GDPR grants rights to individuals. This creates legal friction when a household member exercises their right to object to processing, and the TV cannot distinguish between viewers.

Singapore PDPA
Consent-opt-out model. Businesses must notify individuals and obtain explicit consent for specific data uses. Cross-border transfer rules add another layer for global ad campaigns.
India DPDP Act

SPO Waste: Bidding Against Yourself
Supply Path Optimisation (SPO) is supposed to clean up the supply chain. In practice, CTV's fragmented reseller ecosystem means buyers routinely bid against themselves for the exact same inventory pod.
A single 30-second ad slot on a Samsung TV can appear in 12 different supply paths: the publisher's direct SSP, the OEM's ad exchange, 3 resellers, 2 network-level aggregators, and several programmatic intermediaries. The buyer's DSP sees 12 separate bid requests and bids on all of them. The result is inflated CPMs and a false impression of competitive supply.
OEM Walled Gardens: The New Browser Wars
Samsung, LG, and Vizio are doing to CTV what Chrome, Safari, and Firefox did to the open web. They control the home-screen OS, the app store, the default search, and most critically, the ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) fingerprinting data.

The shift is driven by three forces: (1) better identity resolution that connects TV exposure to mobile conversion, (2) pressure from performance marketers who will not commit budget without measurable ROAS, and (3) platforms like The Trade Desk building measurement stacks that treat CTV as a direct-response channel with a delayed conversion window.
